About the Californian
The Californian is primarily a meat breed, but with their Himalayan markings and dense textured coats they are also popular for show. They began in the 1920’s with George West, who wanted to produce the ideal meat and fur rabbit. He began by crossing Commercial New Zealand Whites, Chinchillas and Himalayans. New Zealand Whites were chosen for their outstanding commercial qualities, Chinchillas for their fur density and Himalayans for their fur texture and small bones. He ended up after years of hard work with a large breed rabbit with good commercial qualities, dense fur with excellent texture and length and Himalayan markings.
There is quite a bit of controversy over which is the better meat breed, the Californian or the New Zealand.
